Ocean View is Norfolk's beach town — seven miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline packed with beach cottages, ranch homes, and duplexes, all sitting inside city limits. It feels like a small coastal town and commutes like a city neighborhood, which is exactly why so many Navy families and first-time buyers land here.

The neighborhood runs west to east in three rough sections. Willoughby sits on the west end, near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and Naval Station Norfolk. Central Ocean View holds Ocean View Beach Park and the densest stretch of cottages and duplexes. East Ocean View is the quieter residential east end — more single-family streets, fewer rentals.

If you're moving here, here's what matters: most homes are single-story, which makes for fast, stair-free loads. Lots are sandy, driveways are often carports, and garages and sheds tend to be packed with years of beach gear. And the bay is right there — which means checking flood maps and booking around summer beach traffic.

Parking the truck.
Most Ocean View residential streets can fit a moving truck at the curb. The tight spots are the narrow lanes around Willoughby and the blocks closest to the beach, where parked cars eat the curb. If you need curb space held — or the street is too narrow to chance it — Norfolk's General Use Permit covers move-in/move-out temporary parking: contact the city's right-of-way (ROW) inspector at least 48 hours before move day so "No Stopping" signs get posted to hold your space. Flood zones.
Bayfront Ocean View sits in flood zones — check the FEMA flood maps for the specific property before you buy or sign a lease. This is a planning step, not something your movers handle, but it matters for where you store things and what goes on a ground floor.

Summer is peak everything.
Summer is peak moving season plus peak beach season plus heat. Book a morning slot — the crew works faster before the afternoon heat, and you'll beat the beach traffic that clogs Shore Drive and the main corridors on beach-event weekends. If your move lands on a big beach weekend, add buffer time to the schedule.

The outdoor-gear tax.
Almost every Ocean View move includes a shed, carport, or garage full of accumulated outdoor equipment. It doesn't fit in boxes neatly and it takes up truck space fast. Stage it in one spot the night before move day and you'll save real time.

Getting there: bases and traffic
Naval Station Norfolk anchors the north side of the city and is a short hop from Willoughby and central Ocean View. Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek–Fort Story sits to the east. Most base commutes from Ocean View run on Shore Drive and local roads — straightforward outside rush hour. Two traffic notes. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (I-64) between Hampton and Norfolk is free but under major expansion construction through February 2027 — build extra time into any Hampton↔Norfolk move. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (Route 13) is tolled, so if your move starts on the Eastern Shore, factor that in. Morning slots beat afternoon ones across the board.
